Orthodontic Surgery for Functional Jaw Position
Orthognathic surgery – also known as corrective jaw surgery – is performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to reposition the upper or lower jaw so the teeth fit together properly.
While braces can correct many tooth and bite misalignments, some cases require more than tooth movement alone. If the root of the problem lies in the position of the jaws, orthognathic surgery may be part of your treatment plan.
In addition to creating a more balanced, symmetrical smile, orthognathic surgery can significantly improve breathing, chewing, and speaking – enhancing both function and appearance.

The Surgical Process
Surgical orthodontics is a team effort that usually takes two to three years to complete. Your smile team will include Dr. Isaac, your orthodontist, and an oral and maxillofacial surgeon – all working together to achieve the best outcome for you.
Dr. Isaac will begin by ensuring your teeth and gums are healthy and ready for orthodontic treatment. Next, Dr. Isaac will meet with you to discuss your smile goals and design a personalized treatment plan. If surgery is part of your plan, he will use braces or Invisalign to move your teeth into the optimal position in preparation for jaw surgery.
Once your teeth are ready, your oral and maxillofacial surgeon will perform orthognathic surgery to reposition your jaw. After surgery, you’ll return to Dr. Isaac for the finishing phase, where he will fine-tune your tooth and bite alignment – leaving you with a smile that’s healthy, functional, and beautifully balanced.
Benefits of Surgical Orthodontics
Surgical orthodontics pairs orthodontic treatment, like braces or Invisalign, with corrective jaw surgery to bring the upper and lower jaws into perfect harmony.
This powerful combination can help with a wide range of concerns – from TMJ disorders and jaw injuries to improper jaw growth and even obstructive sleep apnea.
For many patients, the results go far beyond a straighter smile. Surgical orthodontics can ease chronic headaches, improve breathing, and make chewing and speaking feel natural and comfortable again – helping you enjoy a healthier, more confident life.
